Alcohol changes the way certain drugs work on your system. They can increase their effect or sometimes reduce it. Not sure why, might be the way the body receives the active agents? Either way, it's generally recommended not to. However, it doesn't exactly insta-kill you if you do it anyway. Like I often have a sleeping pill after I've head alcohol and I'm still fine (disclaimer: DON'T DO THAT! And I'm not a total druggy, okay). But there might be complications that can't be predicted, so it's generally better not to.
And in terms of the anti-depressants, like I said, it's because alcohol counteracts the desired effect of those drugs, so it's just plain stupid to drink while you're on them.
