I don't even feel like House was (that much of) an ass with that ending. He and Wilson had discussed the matter of being out in the open about their relationship. And, as you rightly point out, it's not as if Wilson didn't know who he was getting involved with.
You did have me scared when House went ahead and bought the pills, though! And then he managed to resist them, and I never really saw it coming that that would be what he wanted to give to Wilson. But of course it would be that, and it was perfect.
