Title: Painful Adjustments
Fic Pairing: House/Wilson
Fic Warnings: Slash, season 6 premier spoiler
Word count: 2500
Fic rating: Light R for smut light
A/N:  At journal

Summary: Sequel to "Tell Me You Will Understand". House and Wilson are in a new relationship trying to come to terms with "coming out" while dealing with a ghost from House's past.

Chapter sample:

“I’m taking off; I’ll stop by your office before I head out with Lydia.”
Wilson spoke with a false sense of cheer. “Sure, sounds good.” He stepped forward and gave House a quick peck on the lips. Any physical contact they shared was generally for the purpose of sexual gratification so instances like goodbye kisses were still quite awkward.

That sounds like a song lyric, doesn't it?

Anyway...I'm really, really, really getting tired of how badly written some fanfiction is.  I'm not talking about occasional typos, misspellings, etc.  I mean, really bad stuff - bad grammar, changing tenses, changing POV, gross misspelling (for which in this day and age of Spellcheck, there is ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE!), unbelievable ignorance of characters and canon... Now, if someone deliberately goes off on a tangent, creates an AU, or explores "What If's", that's different.  It always comes with a warning and the writer should demonstrate some knowledge of the fandom he/she is writing in.  And those types of stories can be a lot of fun!  But a story that has the characters so OOC that they bear no resemblance to the actual character is more than just sloppy - it's careless, ignorant and a bit disrespectful, I think.  As if the writer couldn't be bothered.

I'm a writer and a script doctor, and I can tell you without hesitation that a writer has no business "breaking the rules" until they know the rules.  Know the form, the discipline, the way a story works and the way words should flow, and then experiment.  Good lord, sometimes I want to take a red pencil to some of the stories and start slashing across them, screaming, "No, no, no, NO!!!"

What do you do when you come across a story that has an intriguing premise, but is so badly written as to be unreadable?  I've started to read some stories, gotten a few sentences in, and had to bail because it hurt my brain.  I seriously have to rein myself in when I want to shoot the author an email saying "Read "Strunk & White's Elements of Style", please, for the love of god and all that's holy!"
