Chase didn’t know when it started, but he first noticed it sometime in early spring as he followed his boss into the hospital after an unsuccessful search of their patient’s home. Tired from the case, (two dead, another three sick, and Foreman gone on vacation meant that they all had increased workloads) Chase almost thought he had imagined it. But no, House had definitely slowed down as they passed the rosebush, left hand reaching to gently pet an emerging bud. There was no time to think about it, however, as a page hastened their steps as fast as House’s leg would allow.
Later, when the patients were finally stable, he was too tired to analyze it fully so he just filed it away under ‘strange-things-House-does-for-no-reason-at-all’ and went to sleep.

He didn’t even recall that strange moment until he and Dr. Wilson were called down to the clinic one day a few months later to try and soothe one of House’s clinic patients. When the walked into the room, the poor woman was in tears and House was glaring darkly at her.
Chase exchanged a quick glance with Wilson before going to kneel next to the woman. She held out her hands, deep scratches oozing fresh blood all over the floor. As he retrieved a box of gauze, he looked over at the pair of men arguing near the door.
Peeking out of House’s right hand where he clutched his cane was a bright red glimmer of petals.
********************************************************
Chase started to watch carefully every time House went near the entrance. Almost without fail, he would stop to caress a leaf or smell one of the blooms. The only times he didn’t was when there was someone else there to see him.
Chase also discovered something else when he decided to stake out the flower bed one evening (just to see if House was the only one fascinated with the bush. He was, but it was interesting to note that Foreman had a soft spot for the birch tree near the parking lot.). Apparently, Wilson really had a grudge against roses, for he never failed to kick the bush on his way out to his car.
********************************************************
By the time the annual summer fundraiser rolled around, Chase had almost mustered up enough courage to ask House just what was so special about The Rosebush (which totally deserved the capital letters). He spotted his chance to talk to House alone when the tall, limping diagnostician made a slow dash for the door the moment Cuddy’s attention was drawn to a waved checkbook.
Sneaking through the darkened doors, he heard a strange rustling noise from the direction of The Rosebush. As he turned, a muffled curse replaced the rustling. A disheveled House appeared, but before Chase had a chance to ask him what he was doing, House pushed him aside and headed back towards the ballroom.
As Chase slowly followed him back into the building a slight movement alerted him to a figure standing next to the window beside the door. Barely visible in the shadows, Wilson was staring balefully out at the flowerbed. When he shifted his icy look to Chase, the Australian decided not to question him. Instead, he let out a sound that was most definitely not a squeak and scurried back to the whirling brightness of the party.
*************************************************************
So when Wilson stormed in two weeks later, covered in wood chips and shredded leaves, stalked across the conference room, and pulled House into a searing kiss, Chase was probably the least surprised out of everyone.
