Part 4 – Through Other Eyes
They pulled up at the local hospital, parking in a disabled space. Wilson helped his mother out of the car, House slowly easing himself out.
Even though this morning had shaken Helen, she knew Joe was strong and getting the best possible help. She didn’t think obsessing over him would be good for her, and it definitely wouldn’t help anything. She was determined to keep her thoughts from dwelling on what could have been – or what could still be - as much as possible.
She tucked her arm through her son’s as they walked into the building, and glanced at House to see him limping along with surprising grace beside them. She smiled. Greg was so good for her Jimmy. Greg kept him just insane enough so that he wasn’t too staid or stuffy. She could that Jimmy liked House more than he let on-she knew how to read her sons. She wasn’t so sure about Greg’s feelings-he could be a hard man to read - but he had always treated her and Joe well, and had stood by Jimmy throughout his ridiculous marriages, so she was hopeful. He was rude and uncouth when he wanted to be, and she had heard some stories - especially from her daughters-in law – that should have made her hair curl, but she took them with a pinch of salt. Even if they were true, they tended to make her smile rather than pull away. He was handsome, and graceful despite the cane, and she had grown to love him as one of the family over the years that she had known him.
She thought back to the first time they had met. Jimmy had brought Greg and Stacy home with Debbie for a 4th of July party. It was before the infarction, of course. Greg had been full of life, teasing all of them dreadfully. He had paid special attention to mocking Peter, who had been in college at the time and had brought his girlfriend home.
Jimmy and Greg had played golf and tennis and gone jogging during the long weekend they had spent there. Helen and Joe had already been able to tell that Jimmy was infatuated by his new friend. He and Debbie had been starting to fall apart at the time, and Stacy had had a case on the go that she couldn’t completely leave even for the holiday, so Debbie had spent a good deal of the break on her own. Helen had found her sulking a few times, and had tried to buck her up, but perhaps her own lukewarm feelings to the woman had stopped her from trying as hard as she should. Within two months of that holiday, a divorce was in progress.
Greg had been perfectly happy with Stacy, and Helen had liked her, although she had never gotten to know her well.
Then within the year, Jimmy had got himself engaged to Bonnie. Helen hadn’t expressed her doubts at both such an obvious rebound, or about Bonnie herself. Jimmy had to make his own mistakes, and he certainly appeared happy enough. However, Greg had made no bones about his opinion of Bonnie as a grade-one bimbo. Jimmy had just laughed at him, and carried on.
Then there had been the wedding, the honeymoon, and the infarction.
It had been a beautiful wedding, with House as best man. His speech was very-unorthodox-but in deference to the occasion, he had toned down his worst comments. Jimmy and Bonnie had gone to Acapulco on their honeymoon for three weeks. On their return, Bonnie had Hector, and Jimmy discovered that Greg had had the infarction, and that no one had informed him.
At first, Jimmy had been furious. But Helen had shortly found him dejected at what his friend had lost, and for not having been able to help him through the initial problems, or to provide a correct diagnosis in the first place. He knew if he had been around, Greg would have come to him about the pain in his leg rather than to the idiots in the clinic, and, hopefully, he would have pursued the problem better than they had. Helen had pressed his hand, and just asked how all of this was helping Greg.
Suddenly realizing how pathetic he was being, he had jumped up and gone straight to the hospital to see his friend, and hadn’t left his side for months, through every agonizing minute of Greg’s slow recovery. Jimmy had stayed with him after Stacy left, staying late into the evenings, hoping that the black dogs of despair wouldn’t overcome the older man.
Obviously, Jimmy’s marriage hadn’t been able to stand this. Within eighteen months he was once again single, rumors of his infidelities flying, but Helen was sure it had really been all the time he’d spent with Greg.
Greg had been in a bad way. Helen and Joe had visited him more than once, taking food and making sure he was looking after himself. Helen had basically taken over the role of his mother, who had called a few times, but hadn’t shown herself after Greg left the hospital. Greg hadn’t been surprised at this, murmuring once in Helen’s hearing that his father wouldn’t have let her come on her own, and he was better without a visit from his father. Helen had broken her heart over this, and made extra effort afterwards, treating him as one of her own. By now, she just thought of him as another son.
Jimmy’s third marriage had come as a complete surprise. She hadn’t even known that he was dating when the wedding invitation came in the mail. Julie had been married before as well, so they had decided on a civil ceremony. House, Peter, Joy, Helen, Joe, and Julie’s parents and sister were the only attendees. Julie had always seemed quite domineering to Helen, and she now knew that Jimmy hadn’t really been happy with her since the end of their honeymoon. However, she also knew that Jimmy was self-conscious about his string of marriages, and it had taken Julie to have an affair before they split.
Jimmy had actually lived at Greg’s place for a while after the divorce and Helen had waited to see what happened, but something had gone wrong and she still didn’t know what.
Helen decided that enough was enough. She knew her middle son was stubborn, but it was time she started to push him in the right direction. The problem was to leave him unaware that she was pushing-subtlety was the word. First of all, she needed to see if she could tell what Greg’s feelings for Jimmy were. After all, it was for the happiness of both of them.
She felt much better now that her course of action was decided. Leading the way, Helen drew the two men into her husband’s room.

Re: Thanks and Help?
Date: 2007-10-25 11:30 am (UTC)Maybe from now on you could put only the link in the communities and leave the text only in your LJ. That way you'll have all the comments in the same page.
Anyway, since the first place where I found your story was, as I said, your LJ, you could add a couple of lines in the header of the fic, like this.
Previous parts: part 1 (http://elesecks.livejournal.com/2216.html) | part 2 (http://elesecks.livejournal.com/2424.html) | part 3 (http://elesecks.livejournal.com/2589.html)
This is the code for the above lines (you can copy and paste):
