Anyone of you noticed that when House breaks into Wilson's hotel room (the whole TiVo incient), there's a 1l-bottle of white wine standing on Wilson's table?

Just wondered what that was for. Maybe it's different in New Jersey, but where I live you don't just have bottles of wine standing about. Also, it wasn't part of the plot, and the people who decorate the sets must have some idea about what they put where and why.

I just dunnow what Wilson needs that bottle for. This is bugging me since I saw the episode more than two weeks ago.

By 'vine', could you possibly mean 'wine'?

No problem. :)

And it could just be a general drink that he was sipping while eating his room service or while he watches his TV, or he could be self-medicating his depression.

Well it was probably in the fridge, and he was drinking it when he got paged, and in a hurry thinking all of his patients were exploding or something, rushed over without putting it away.

Or maybe House looked through his fridge and took out the wine, drank some and didn't bother to put it back?

Possibly there to reinforce the fact that Wilson's depressed?

What came to mind immediately were some Radiohead lyrics...

"White wine and sleeping pills / help me get back to your arms / cheap sex and sad films / help me get where I belong"

Not that that really has anything to do with anything, but hey.

So do I! The lyric was eventually changed to "red wine" for the studio recording, but I always liked the way "white wine" sounded better. ;)

Ah; but white wine compliments fish and medication.

Heathen. :P

You must not be much of a drinker if you are able to keep a bottle on your desk at all times.
I tried keeping a bottle of Maker's on my desk-but the next morning when I woke up in a pool of my own vomit and then tried to sit up I hit my head on the desk and then fell back into to puddle of puke...yeah, well that's when I decided to keep the liquor somewhere less accessible.

I don't think having a bottle of wine out is that odd. It does have a flair of bon vivant about the person doing it and it fits my concept of Wilson. On the other hand, having WHITE wine out is odd as it needs to be served chilled usually. So either he finished it and left the empty bottle around, or he forgot to put it back into the fridge after having a glass... either way, it's terribly wasteful.

I think if they were trying to imply a drinking problem they'd show more than just one bottle... just use a different imagery. But that's just a gut feeling.

Hm, well a full, unopened, unrefridgerated bottle of white wine usually implies that it was a gift. Wilson knows his way around food so if he was going to drink it, he'd refridgerate it. It's a crime to drink white wine unchilled! Maybe some patient or so gave him a bottle of wine to say thank you? ^^;

Thanks!

Maybe it's not about having a drinking problem exactly, but something about the image of him alone in a hotel room drinking a bottle of wine is kind of depressing.

Okay, I'm going to go wine-geek here...

Most white wines shouldn't be chilled as much as most Americans serve them; that is, they should be served at about 55 degrees Fahrenheit (I'm not sure of the Celsius conversion). Generally you're supposed to stick it in the fridge for about half an hour to an hour. So maybe Wilson's got it out because he has no where else to put it that's not the fridge, and he pops it in the fridge when he gets home from work and a bit before he orders his room service.

And I think "Grey's Anatomy" totally stole this bit for Callie. (Along with Addison's red Corvette, the free clinic, Coma Guy... is McDreamy going to have an infarction soon? Will Karev get shot by an angry patient?)

i've been reading the book, and it's kinda depressing how many people have asked me if it's the same thing as the show.

After what he did this week, I hope so.

That's evidence of House's plan B; If Wilson doesn't believe the page, go to his room with a big bottle of wine, get him tipsy, seduce him and search the room for the guitar while he's sleeping off the afterglow. Wake him up with obnoxious power chords, 'cause he's cute when he winces with a hangover. Pet him and crawl back into bed.

House was actually rooting for plan B; hence his grumpy manner on the phone.

Maybe the bottle is from the vineyard 'House's House of Wining'?'

Yes, I know I miss-spelled the word (deliberately to make my point) but I just thought of it and it made me smile, so I shared. Sorry.

I don't know the answer to your question though. Sorry. Again.

Additional thought: Wilson is supposed to be the responsible one in terms of drug usage, no? And he's on anti-depressants, so he shouldn't be drinking!

ow that'd be a real killer, eh? But seriously, alcohol is a depressant. Wilson is talking anti-depressants to NOT be depressed. As a doctor he knows this. It'd be totally absurd, and OOC, to make him drink on anti-depressants.

Alcohol changes the way certain drugs work on your system. They can increase their effect or sometimes reduce it. Not sure why, might be the way the body receives the active agents? Either way, it's generally recommended not to. However, it doesn't exactly insta-kill you if you do it anyway. Like I often have a sleeping pill after I've head alcohol and I'm still fine (disclaimer: DON'T DO THAT! And I'm not a total druggy, okay). But there might be complications that can't be predicted, so it's generally better not to.

And in terms of the anti-depressants, like I said, it's because alcohol counteracts the desired effect of those drugs, so it's just plain stupid to drink while you're on them.
